Seal of Biliteracy

The Seal of Biliteracy is an award earned by students who demonstrate a high level proficiency in one or more languages, in addition to English, during their high school career. The Seal of Biliteracy was approved by the Illinois State Board of Education with the intention of promoting cultural literacy and bilingualism to meet the demand of employers needing bilingual employees. Students that earn the Seal of Biliteracy will have the official seal appended to their high school diploma and transcript.  Some universities may also award college credit for earning the Seal.

Students and families should note that our level 3 and level 4 world language courses are offered in partnership with MCC so that students in French, German, and Spanish will likely earn more credits via dual credit (16 earned) than the Seal of Biliteracy (for example 12 credits from NIU).  For this reason, it may not be time and/or cost effective to pursue the Seal of Biliteracy in these areas.  For students with proficiency in other languages (e.g. Polish) earning the Seal may be a good way to be recognized for your bilingualism.
